|General Program Description|
|The PTA program has a 1+1 curriculum format. PTA classes begin in the fall, and graduation is at the end of the following summer. Students spend approximately 24-40 hours per week in class and clinic during the fall and spring semester, and 40 hours per week in clinical rotations during the summer.|
Each student has eight clinical experiences spaced throughout the program. The experience length varies from 1-6 weeks. Types of settings include acute, rehabilitation, outpatient, pediatrics, geriatrics, and private practice. Over 80 sites are available to the program and are located in Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia.
There are two full-time and one part-time faculty members. Both of the full-time faculty members are engaged in clinical practice. The faculty to student ratio is 1:8.
The total number of students at the college is approximately 4,000. The PTA program accepts 16 students annually; transfer students are eligible.
The deadline for application to the program is April 15 for the class beginning the following fall. Included in consideration for admission are grade point averages (GPA) in prerequisite courses, observation hour evaluations, written responses to an essay question, and professional interview questions. All pre-technical courses must be completed with a C or better and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required. Observation forms for 20 documented hours of observation in two different physical therapy settings (acute/long term and outpatient) for a minimal of 40 hours total are required for consideration into the program. CPR and First Aid certification is necessary prior to the clinical phase of the program. Please contact the program for a complete list of prerequisites.
95% of admitted students graduate from the program (3-year average); 87% of the graduates passed the licensure exam (3-year average); and 100% of those program graduates responding to surveys are employed (3-year average).
|Tuition, fees and financial aid|
For the 2013-2014 academic year, tuition is $107 per credit for county students, $200 per credit for in-state students and $240 per credit for out-of-state students. Other fees include registration fee of $35 per semester, lab fees of $760, a testing fee of $75, a learning harbor fee of $16 and additional miscellaneous fees (physical exam, CPR, first aid, APTA membership) which will vary in cost. Average book costs are $825 for the fall and $175 for the spring semesters. Students are also responsible for costs associated with travel and lodging for clinical rotations. The Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Allegany College has been designated as a Health Manpower Shortage Program by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. This means that for qualified students all, or a portion of, out-of-county tuition differential will be paid by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Allegany College is located in suburban Cumberland on 316 acres surrounded by the mountains of western Maryland. The college has 12 major buildings providing facilities for approximately 4,000 full-time and part-time students and approximately 8,700 continuing education students. The College Center features a student lounge, dining facility, a 400-seat theater, and most student service offices. The Physical Education Building houses a large gymnasium and an indoor olympic-size pool. On campus housing is offered to students at their cost. The housing complex consists of apartments that each have: four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a shared kitchen and living area.
