| General Program Description |
| The DPT consists of 106 sh and is three years in length. The curriculum consists of 32 weeks of clinical education and 78 hours of didactic coursework. There are twelve full-time and seven adjunct faculty members. The program begins in mid-May and degree requirements are normally satisfied following the completion of the spring semester of the third year. There are four major components of the curriculum: clinical education, entry-level professional based coursework, advanced basic science courses, and elective course work related to evidenced based practice to include a clinical specialty concentration and research concentration. At the end of their program students will complete a comprehensive exam as well as oral presentation of group research. |
Clinical Experiences Thirty-two weeks of clinical experiences are required. Six weeks occur in the spring of the first year, 8 weeks occur during the fall semester of the second year, 8 weeks during the summer between the second and third years, and 10 weeks during the final semester. Clinical education sites are located throughout the US. |
Faculty There are twelve full-time faculty members. Eight of the full-time faculty hold post-professional doctoral degrees, three are certified as clinical specialists. Faculty are involved in the Department’s outpatient orthopedic clinic, the rehabilitation of student athletes, and early intervention programs for Easter Seals UCP of North Carolina. Over the past 3 years, the faculty has averaged six publications in peer-reviewed journals. The faculty to student ratio is 1:9. |
Enrollment Total ECU enrollment is 27,000(61% female, 39% male) from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The program accepts 30 students annually with a preference given to North Carolina residents. |

Tuition, fees and financial aid Full-time tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year were $5,8690 for utilizing Sept 1 - Aug 31 timeframe for in-state students and $19,683 for utilizing Sept 1 - Aug 31 timeframe out-of-state students. Aid is available in the form of grants/scholarships, loans or part-time employment. For specific information, contact the East Carolina University Office of Student Financial Aid at 252/328-6610. There are limited funds available in the form of small loans through the Department of Physical Therapy. |
Student life There is dormitory housing for over 5,328 students and a great supply of alternate housing (i.e., apartments, condominiums, and fraternities/sororities) in a variety of price ranges. East Carolina University has an extensive intercollegiate athletic program for men and women and is in Division I of the NCAA. Physical therapy students participate in intramural activities. ECU is located in Greenville in the eastern region of the state, approximately 90 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Raleigh to the west. It is within a 4 to 6-hour drive of mountain recreational activities. Greenville is serviced by a small airport with commuter connecting flights to Charlotte. Raleigh/Durham international airport is 2 hours from Greenville. |
