|The Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum integrates evidence from the scientific and professional literature to inform didactic instruction, laboratory experiences, and applied clinical practice internships under the supervision of licensed physical therapists. The curriculum provides opportunities for students’ interactions with patients with pathology under faculty supervision in on-campus experiences. A video example of students interacting with patients in an on-campus neuromuscular “mock” clinic under faculty supervision is posted on the department’s website: www.hhs.csus.edu/pt. This video is an example of the clinical experiences students have in didactic courses (prior to going on clinical internships). The video also illustrates one of the many links our program shares with the local community.
The primary mission of the California State University, Sacramento Doctor of Physical Therapy program is to graduate knowledgeable, effective, adaptable and reflective physical therapist generalist practitioners and health care leaders. Graduates demonstrate ethical, responsible, professional behavior, are sensitive to cultural and psychosocial differences, use evidence derived from the scientific and professional literature to inform independent judgments to meet patient needs and to advance the profession. They utilize critical and integrative thinking and problem-solving, practice lifelong learning, and provide services that contribute to the optimal health and function of community residents.
The Doctor of Physical Therapy program encompasses three years of progressively complex didactic instruction, laboratory experience, and clinical education. The clinical component consists of 36 weeks of full-time, off-campus clinical internships. Following completion of both the clinical and academic program, graduates are awarded a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and are eligible to take the national licensure examination. Admission is for fall semester only. Classes are offered primarily during daytime hours and full-time study is required.
There are 36 weeks of full-time, off-campus clinical experiences. The first 12-week experience follows the second year of didactic instruction. Two 12 week experiences occur during the spring and summer of the third year. In addition, there are integrated clinical experiences on campus under faculty supervision in two clinics, one in adult neuromuscular patient management and one in musculoskeletal patient management. There is also an optional pediactic neuromuscular patient management clinic.
There are nine full-time faculty members, and numerous adjunct faculty. All nine full-time faculty hold post-professional doctoral degrees. Over the past 3 years, the faculty has averaged 6 publications in peer-reviewed journals. The faculty to student ratio is 1:11.5. Additional faculty will be hired for the 2014-15 academic year bringing the faculty student ratio to 1:9.6 by the 3rd year of the new DPT curriculum.
The university serves nearly 30,000 undergraduate and 5,300 graduate students that are broadly representative of the diversity of the state. The Department of Physical Therapy has an enrollment of 96 students, with each class composed of 32 students.
An applicant must: have received (or will receive by the end of the Summer 2013 term) a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university; have completed ten (10) of the twelve (12) prerequisite courses by the December 2, 2013 deadline; complete all courses in the Spring 2014 and/or Summer 2014 term (a maximum of one (1) of these courses may be completed during the summer); have a minimum of 2.5 GPA for the last 60 semester units of your baccalaureate degree for the CSU’s Office of Graduate Studies’ Graduate Application; have a minimum of 3.00 GPA in a the prerequisite coursework with grades of C or better in each course as required for the Department of Physical Therapy; submit three (3) separate required application forms to apply for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program - 1. CSUS Department of Physical Therapy's Supplemental Application (apply online at http://www.csus.edu/HHS/pt/prospective_student/index.html) Deadline: December 2, 2013; submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities that you have attended with your PTCAS Application and for the CSU Graduate Application; have accumulated and documented on PTCAS a minimum 100 total hours of observation/work/volunteer experience in at least two different physical therapy setting types under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist (these hours must be completed by the time of the PT departmental application deadline); submit two (2) Recommendation Forms from U.S. licensed physical therapists and one (1) from a college level professor with your PTCAS Application; submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing) by December 3, 2012. 96.9% of students admitted to the program successfully complete the program and graduate (3-year average); and 100% of graduate survey respondents are employed. 97% of graduates pass the licensure examination (overall 3 year average).
|Tuition, fees and financial aid|
The 2013-14 tuition/fees will be $8,652.00 per semester, non-resident students pay an additional $372 per unit charge, not including parking or augmented health fees. In addition to university tuition fees, students can be expected to incur costs of approximately $1,500.00 per year for books, supplies, malpractice/liability insurance and laboratory fees. Students are required to provide their own health insurance and assume responsibility for transportation and housing costs for clinical internships. In addition to university scholarships and financial aid, there are specific physical therapy scholarships and local facility forgivable loan programs available. California State University, Sacramento, California’s Capital University, offers students strong academic programs in small classes taught by professors. The university is a beautiful and stimulating place to learn. The cosmopolitan atmosphere of the area carries onto the campus. Located along the edge of the historic American River, students have access to miles of bike and walking trails in a parkway stretching along one side of the campus. The community has a symphony, opera, ballet, numerous offerings in the arts, and professional sports teams, Sierra skiing, Lake Tahoe, and the San Francisco Bay Area for additional recreational and cultural offerings. The Physical Therapy program is housed in a current teaching facility with state-of-the- art equipment. The campus offers health services, a modern fitness & wellness center, counseling, tutoring, and services to students with disabilities.
